Miami Marlins Acquire Jake Burger From Chicago White Sox
Burger Traded to Marlins for Minor League Pitcher
The Miami Marlins have acquired first baseman Jake Burger from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher Tanner McCalister, the teams announced Tuesday.
Burger, 27, hit .232 with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs in 93 games with the White Sox last season. He has a career .242 batting average with 38 home runs and 116 RBIs in 245 games.
McCalister, 23, went 7-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 22 starts for Double-A Pensacola last season. He was ranked as the Marlins' No. 17 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
The Marlins are hoping that Burger can provide some power to their lineup. They finished 29th in the majors in home runs last season.
Burger is a versatile player who can play first base, third base, and the outfield. He is expected to compete for the starting first base job in Miami.
The White Sox are rebuilding and they decided to trade Burger, who is entering his final year of arbitration. They are hoping that McCalister can develop into a valuable starter for them in the future.
The Marlins are hoping that Burger can help them improve on their 67-95 record from last season. They are looking to contend for a playoff spot in 2023.
