Angela Dorothea Merkel, born on July 17, 1954, is a German politician and former scientist who served as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021. Born in Hamburg, West Germany, she pursued a degree in physics and worked as a research scientist before entering politics.
Political Rise
Merkel's political career began in the Democratic Awakening party in East Germany. After German reunification in 1990, she joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and quickly rose through its ranks. She was elected to the Bundestag (parliament) in 1990 and served as Minister for Women and Youth from 1991 to 1994.
