Aurora Borealis Sighted in Maine!
Northern Lights Appear in the United States
Latest Update: 9:30 EST
The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, was spotted in Maine on Thursday night, according to reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Nate deLabry, a photographer from Maine, captured some of the first images of the aurora from the United States. The photos, which were posted on social media, show the aurora as a faint green glow in the sky.
The aurora borealis is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's magnetic field. The particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, where they collide with atoms in the atmosphere and produce light. The color of the aurora depends on the type of atom that is struck.
